First let us say, the Red Cat theatre is superfab! It is tucked deep in the bowels of the new Disney Hall downtown- and has an old world vibe to it- paired with modernity of other sorts.
Joey’s show pays homage to the art of puppetry. Her co-creator in this ambitious endeavor is Basil Twist (hence the name of the show), a master puppeteer and illusionist.
The show opens with Joey being abducted by aliens. She winds up in a Garden of Eden-like environment—eats and starts singing. Microphones pop out of mushrooms- it’s pretty surreal. In one scene- she is like king Kong's wife Queen Kong--towering over
The technical effects were mesmerizing--beyond anything which we have ever seen in Los Angeles theatre. Ms. Arias’ costumes were conceived by Thierry Manfred Mugler. The body suit she was wearing through most of the performance gave her alluring curves, from every angle. And as is her long- standing preference, Ms. Arias’ hind quarters were fully exposed.
Special congrats to Basil Twist and all the marionette masters who created this wonderful work behind the scenes. You string pullers rule!
The run ends December 13th.
