Jessica Darwin was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and has been creating some form of art since she was 2 years old. Her mother, an Art Historian and Interior Designer, and her father, an Engineer, influenced her love of art & pattern making. Jessica attended Moore College of Art & Design. In 2006, she entered the Arts of Fashion International Competition and her concept of body modification was selected to continue to their design competition. There Jessica won the top award of a two-month scholarship to La Cambre in Brussels, Belgium. While in Belgium, she studied European conceptual design, draping, pattern making, historical corsetry & illustration. She then returned to Moore College to create her senior collection, the Badlands. In 2007, Jessica graduated with Best in Show and shortly after, moved to Los Angeles where she worked for Morphine Generation, as well as Mike & Chris under Cynthia Vincent.To this day, the creative thought process that she learned from La Cambre stays with her, knowing that there is no limit to “Fashion”. LAFW: For your line Karla photographed, what were your inspirations, and what are you trying to achieve? Did movies, materials, and or textures provide inspiration?
JD: The campaign shoot, (Model Gina McNeil, the Venus short film), was inspired by surrealism & modern low brow art, fused with European high fashion & simplicity. We wanted to evoke a beautifully creepy mood for the shoot. The model, Gina, fit this role perfectly with her long limbs & high fashion aesthetic. I had mentioned to Karla about creating a short film while shooting, and she was more than enthusiastic about the idea. Her partner, David Gallardo is a film director. With the creative minds of hair stylist Sienree Du & Make Up Artist Leibi Carias, the campaign & film the Venus, was born. We shot inside of a halfway built mansion in Hermosa Beach. The Architecture firm, Starr Design Group, was in the process of building a dream home, combining antique beams from a farm, smooth concrete & rust stained walls, with just the right amount of sawdust.

JD: For the Look Book shoot, I wanted to show the clothing in a simpler light; a bit less editorial and more about the wear ability of the clothing. Karla and I wanted to keep the same creepy, lowbrow aesthetic, so we knew that model Lacy Valentine was a perfect fit. The combination of her bold tattoos & long frame would work well to convey a high fashion, but yet, alternative feel. That’s kind of how I view my clothing, sleek high fashion with an alternative feel.LAFW: For the specific pieces photographed, do you have any specific comments regarding these items? E.g. descriptions of the materials, where you sourced them, et cetera?
JD: I love to work in leather, soft matte satins, cotton twills that are both new and vintage military wear used as fabric. I also love to work with latex, as the material is so delicate and unique. It is used a lot in the fetish scene and I want to expand out to show everyone the unique beauty of the material. People, who normally wouldn’t wear it, can now see the true luxury of it. That is why I have come up with a simple wearable tank top and halter, each made of latex, so that the wearer can fit them into everyday outfits. I have also used latex in non- traditional draping, as well as sewn together with vintage military twill, as shown in the silhouettes. The silhouettes were inspired by surrealist-dripping paintings and post apocalyptic fashion. There is a bit of everything in the collection: from a detailed leather jacket inspired by bullet casings, a backless suspension gown with a bustle suspended by chain, knit and latex tank tops, leggings, leather holsters and belts, all the way down to simple latex fingerless gloves, to top off any outfit with just the right touch.

Karla Ticas born (1986) and raised in an Los Angeles fell in love with cinema because she had a film buff for a father. This love of imagery led her to study photography at Brooks Institute of Photography. While at Brooks, Karla started off in the beauty and fashion photography industry as a makeup artist. Karla's many sides are inspired by many other photographers. Part of her is inspired by Ellen von Unwerth and Marc Lagrance. While other sides of Karla are inspired by Miles Aldridge, Mert Atlas and Marcus Piggot. The one thing Karla loves the most about photography is the ability to collaborate with different artists. She loves the team she works with and wouldn't where she is without her team.
Karla currently has a photography & retouching business.
