Monah Li in a belly dancing costume she designed herself
We had a great time last week sitting down with design icon and author Monah Li. We shot a video blog of the designer (currently being edited) in her chic new boutique in Echo Park. (1282 Sunset Blvd.)
In the very emotionally honest interview, Monah chats about her childhood in Vienna, her schooling at FIDM, her forced return to Austria, her ultimate return to America and success found as a designer to celebrities, with an international clientele. Monah opens up about addictions to love and sex, and how she healed herself from a 19 year eating disorder, with the help of belly dancing! Social entrepreneurship is also on her mind these days, and Monah would like to create a new line in collabororation with drug and alcohol rehab program graduates.
We talked about her original retail outpost on Vermont Ave., which the press began to dub "the new Melrose Avenue" as Monah's colorful presence began to transform the area from grungy but fabulous bohemia (Onyx Cafe, for those who remember) into a fashionable shopping district. (I played a role in transforming Los Feliz myself, as a long-time PR consultant to the LFVBID, achieving flattering profiles in national glossies, and co-producing the Street Fair for years.) I lived right around the corner at the time on Melbourne Ave., and used to love to pop into Monah's shop, where it always smelled so good, with so much beauty everywhere. I would buy my sisters dresses there for Christmas.
In the present day, Monah is located on a stretch of Sunset Blvd. near Elysian Park, that has a similar feel to Los Feliz's Vermont Ave. in the late '90's. If you are seeking unique and original holiday gifts, I would highly suggest a visit to Monah Li.
