LA Fashion Week is delighted to support the After School All-Stars Fashion Program!
Within the realms of inner-city communities in Los Angeles; some of the most notoriously violent and dangerous areas in the nation, the kids that reside within the neighborhoods focus on surviving the day. In areas plagued with gang violence, programs such as fashion style & design are not commonplace. Though an after-school program is bringing the world of fashion and the opportunities that the industry offers to these youths.
After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) is a leading after-school program provider whose programs educate, enlighten and inspire thousands of students each day through after-school activities centered around health, fitness and nutrition; the visual and performing arts; and youth leadership and community service learning. NBA superstar, Kobe Bryant is an ASAS-LA Program Ambassador.
The organization brings innovative, cutting-edge enrichment programs to K-12 students that contribute to reducing drug use, crime and violence; while increasing their safety during the after school hours. ASAS-LA serves 5,000 students daily across 36 schools located in deserving areas throughout LA County.
After-School All-Stars, Los Angeles offers fantastic fashion programs at several school sites, where students research fashion designs and sew their different looks. ASAS-LA believes that an interest in fashion & creativity should not be limited by socioeconomic circumstances, and the programs enable students to cultivate their talents. Students are also visited by fashion executives and learn about the careers that exist within the industry.
“In communities filled with violence, safe self-expression in necessary,” says ASAS-LA spokesperson, Shannon Mayock. “The fashion programs also introduce students to a world that they never knew existed. When kids find something they are passionate about, it creates a path toward success.”
