A Trio of Talent Entertains at the New Jazz Venue El Cid for the Indie Hotspot
June 13, 2012 was the launch of the Indie Hotspot Silver Lake Jazz Series hosted by jazz singer/flautist Kaylene Peoples, who was also a featured performer, along with actress/singer Chase Masterson, and saxophonist Dave Pell. This evening took place at El Cid, a restaurant/bar that is known for Flamingo music and dance for the last 50 years. El Cid promoter Michael McCarthy has been presenting indie bands, short films, open mics, and more for over three years for the quaint venue; and the Indie Hotspot Silver Lake Jazz Series was shift from that direction. The venue is beautiful with a patio and full bar. That’s where the red carpet was and legend Hubert Laws (3-time Grammy nominee), Park & Recreation’s Jay Jackson, and Glee’s Bill A. Jones were just a few who stopped for a photo opp.
Once the show started, Kaylene came out on stage and talked about the Indie Hotspot and why starting a jazz tradition in Silver Lake was is necessary. “Creating new venues for jazz is something that really needs to happen to keep jazz music spreading throughout our communities. I’m excited to be able to host this event this evening. You, the audience members, are the biggest key in making this evening a success,” says Kaylene Peoples.
Kaylene sang mostly bossa nova and soloed brilliantly on her flute. Some of the highlights of her performance were “Summertime,” “Girl from Ipanema,” and “One Note Samba.” She showed off her vocal prowess and wowed everyone with the heartfelt song “Funny Valentine.” Chase Masterson performed a series of songs by Joanie Summers. Her performance was delightfully playful. Especially when she sang the songs “This Can’t Be Love” and “Fever.” Dave Pell played tenor sax, and for a man of 87 years, he blew everyone in that room away. Then Jay Jackson surprised us all with a wonderful blues song, giving us a sneak peek of what to expect for his upcoming July 11th Indie Hotspot performance.
Overall, the Indie Hotspot Silver Lake Jazz Series Launch was a very entertaining and successful evening; and the trio of talent that entertained that night was the perfect combination of refreshing, vintage, and legendary jazz!
Sponsors for the evening were Boogsey Music, The Mouse House Studio, Agenda Magazine, Em & Co, and iRock Jazz
